INTERVIEW WITH MATTHEW FROST

Q And A With Matthew Frost, a multi award winning director, who won several awards at the LFFF

Q. How and when did you become interested in filmmaking?

A. I was first drawn in by a friend who was making little films on a video camera for fun in Jr High School!

Q.What is a fashion film?

A. A fashion film lives across genres and styles and usually involves some kind of aesthetics or trend that gravitates around the aura of fashion in one way or another…if that makes sense!

Q.Why make a fashion film?

A. I think it’s a great way to get into making films since it’s so open and free.

Q. What makes fashion film different to other short film genres?

A.Because it’s hard to pin point exactly what the genre is, it’s able to encompass an exciting wide range of creative talent from all kinds of backgrounds.

Q. Do you have friends making movies as well and do you sense competition amongst you. What do you think of their movies?

A.I love gassing peoples work up! It’s so hard to make anything happen, it’s so much work just to get it out, so it’s important to be positive and welcoming! Any creative field is competitive and that’s great too. Everyones always angling for attention one way or another, but it’s all suppose to be fun and inspiring. That’s the point. I love when someone I know or respect makes amazing work!

Q.Why do you think filmmakers should participate in film festivals?

A. I think it’s important for filmmakers to show what they’ve done and most of all see other work that’s out there. I love that these festivals exist! Thank you for getting it all together!

Q. What are the key elements to making an effective fashion film?

A.For me it would be to take the work, the concept, the execution seriously but never yourself.

Q. What is a difference between a fashion film and advertisement?.

A. A fashion film doesn’t have to always be directly tethered to a brand. I can have more artist freedom perhaps.

Q.How does a fashion film attract customers and brand awareness?.

A. That artistic freedom allows the brands to tell their story in an unconventional way that can really showcase their creativity originality and taste.

Q.What is your suggestion for making some budgets for a film?.

A.Film can obviously be very expensive and finding brands who are willing pay premium budgets are rare! But getting to make these films is always an opportunity to show you can be creative and resourceful with not much.

Q. What advice do you have for aspiring filmmakers?

A.Start somewhere, be bad, fail, try things, don’t be boring, put your work out there, don’t take yourself too seriously and have fun!
